1.0 ASSESSMENT

1.1       Assessment
1.1.1 Candidates will be evaluated throughout every semester based on coursework (essay, projects, practical work, tests and other assignments) given out during each semester.

1.1.2 The types of examination, which can be held are:

subject examination (including continuous assessment throughout the semester and/or final semester examination);
oral examination for the research thesis defence;
thesis assessment;
other examinations as may be determined by the programme.


1.2       Assessment and Examination for Graduate Diploma and Masters Programme
1.2.1 Assessment and examination for candidates pursuing a programme of study by coursework will be based on assessment and examination for the subjects taken during each semester.

1.2.2 Assessment and examination for candidates pursuing a programme of study by full research can comprise:

oral examination to defend the thesis proposal;
thesis assessment;
oral examination for thesis defense before the Examination Board or as may be determined by the programme.
1.2.3 Assessment and examination for candidates pursuing a programme of study by coursework and research can comprise:

subject examination for subjects taken during each semester;
thesis assessment;
oral examination for thesis defense as determined by the programme.


1.3       Assessment and Examination for Doctoral Programmes
1.3.1 Assessment and examination for candidates pursuing a programme of study by full research can comprise:

oral examination for thesis proposal defense before the Thesis Committee;
thesis assessment by the Thesis Examination Board; oral examination for thesis defense before the Board of Examiners as determined by the programme
1.3.2 Assessment and examination for candidates pursuing a programme of study by coursework and research can comprise:

subject examination for subjects taken during each semester;
qualifying examination, if necessary;
comprehensive examination;
thesis assessment;
oral examination for thesis proposal defense before the Thesis Committee;
oral examination for thesis defense before the Board of Examiners as determined by the programme.


1.4      
Candidates are only allowed to take the oral examination for thesis defence not exceeding two (2) times.

1.5       Qualifying and Comprehensive Examinations
1.5.1 For certain programmes, candidates will be required to take a qualifying examination and/or comprehensive examination to qualify the candidate for the award of a degree (for masters programmes) or to continue with the programme of study for the doctoral programme.

1.5.2 Candidates who fail the qualifying examination will be advised to take courses as determined by the Academic Advisor.

1.5.3 Candidates who fail the comprehensive examination can repeat the examination once again

1.5.4 The comprehensive examination will be conducted by a sub-examination committee comprising at least three (3) members (including the Academic Advisor) appointed by the Faculty based on their area of expertise. This Committee will determine the scope of the examination. The Academic Advisor of the Candidate must inform the candidate of the examination requirements six (6) months before the examination is scheduled.



1.6       Candidate may appeal to the Senate of the University if he or she is not satisfied with the results given by the Examination Board.


2.0 GRADING SYSTEM

2.1       A candidate will be evaluated based on the following grade points:

B+       75 - 79 3.33 (Credit)
B         70 - 74 3.0 (Credit)
B-        65 - 69 2.67 (Pass)

C         55 - 59 2.0 (Fail)
C-        50 - 54 1.67(Fail)
D+       45 - 49 1.33 (Fail)
D         40 - 44 1.0 (Fail)
F          0 - 39   0.00 (Fail)
X         -           0.00 (Fail)
IC        -           Incomplete
S/US   -           Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory
W        -           Withdraw
P/F      -           Pass/Fail
IP        -           In Progress
2.2       An F grade can also be given to candidates who do not take the final examination for a subject for whom he has registered.
2.3       An X grade will be given to candidates who are barred from taking the examination due to having less than 80 % of total attendance of lecture or tutorial sessions. Such grade will also be given to candidates who enter the examination hall later than thirty (30) minutes after the examination starts, without reasonable explanation.
2.4       An IC grade will be given to candidates who have not completed any of the requirements of a particular subject except for the examination or tests, subject to the following terms:
An application to receive an IC Grade must be sent to the Dean of the Centre for Graduate Studies after obtaining the approval of the lecturer;
The application for an IC Grade must be submitted during the fifteenth week of the semester;
The IC Grade must be redeemed within four (4) weeks after the last date of the said semester
2.5       An S/US grade will be given to candidates who register for courses that will not taken into account for the calculation of the CGPA.
2.6       A W grade will be given to candidates who submit an application to the Dean of the Centre for Graduate Studies after obtaining the approval of the lecturer concerned to withdraw from the examination on condition the application is made before the end of the tenth week of the semester concerned.
2.7       An IP grade will be given to candidates who are completing their thesis.The credit hour for the thesis is not taken into account for CGPA calculation.


3.0 TERM OF CONTINUED REGISTRATION

3.1       Pass Status
A candidate who obtains a CGPA of more than 3.00 for the semester obtains a Pass Status and can proceed to the next semester.

3.2       Conditional Pass Status
A candidate who obtains a CGPA of less than 3.00 and at least 2.67 up to 2.99 for the semester will obtain a Conditional Pass Status. The said candidate will be given a warning to upgrade his CGPA to achieve a Pass Status for the next semester.

3.3       Fail Status
A candidate who obtains a CGPA of less than 2.67 in any semester will obtain a Fail Status and will be terminated from the University.
A candidate who obtains a Conditional Pass Status for two (2) consecutive semesters will also be terminated from the University.


4.0 TERMS FOR REPEATING COURSEWORK

4.1       A doctoral candidate who obtains a grade point of less than 3.00 for the compulsory courses as determined by the programme will be required to repeat the subject.
4.2       A master candidate who obtains a grade point of less than 2.33 in any subject will be required to repeat the subject.
4.3       A candidate is not allowed to repeat the examination for a subject he/she has passed just to obtain a better grade point average.


5.0 AWARD OF DEGREE

In order to be awarded the degree, a candidate must fulfill the requirements as follows:

follow and pass the examination for all subjects as determined by the programme of study and obtain a CGPA of at least 3.00;
sit for any other examination as may be determined by the programme of study;
fulfill all requirements of the Universities and University Colleges Act and other related acts;
settle all debts and dues owing to the University;
for candidates pursuing a programme of study by research, the candidate must have presented and defended the thesis successfully.


6.0 TERMINATION OF STUDY

If a candidate is found to obtain an unsatisfactory academic report or has violated the Universities and University Colleges Act and other related acts, the Centre for Graduate Studies can make a recommendation to the Senate to have his/her candidature terminated.


7.0 POWERS OF SENATE

The Senate can make any exceptions to any of the terms under these Rules.
